Pet insurance could come in handy for the 20 per cent of dog and cat owners who admit they cannot afford to pay if they were hit with a significant bill from the vet, according to Gocompare.com. Research from the comparison website found that 60 per cent of cat and dog owners do not have pet insurance, and if faced with a vet’s bill of £500 or more, their pets might not be able to get the treatment they need. Of those without pet insurance, some would pay for the treatment out of their income or savings, while 15 per cent would use their credit card or take out a loan, getting into debt in order to care for their pets. Some pet owners spend more on treats than they do on pet insurance, the study revealed, as the average dog or cat owner spends £120.84 a year on toys, treats, and clothes. The average owner spends £241.68 each year on trips to the vet for their pooch or kitty.

Without sufficient home insurance, however, the loss or damage of computer equipment could render the digital music collection lost forever, and could leave music lovers without their tunes and out of pocket, Sainsbury’s warns. Fraud fighters from around the country gathered at the National Institutes of Health near Washington, D.C. yesterday to focus on taking the fight against health care fraud to the next level. Sponsored by the Departments of Health & Human Services and Justice, the gathering was the first of its kind that brought together federal program managers, private insurers, technology experts and policymakers. More than 300 people attended the event.

The summit featured a good mix of prepared presentations and speeches (including those by AG Eric Holder and HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius) along with hands-on breakout sessions that strategized five key areas. A theme throughout the day-long summit was the need for greater information sharing and building more partnerships between public and private sectors.
