Marks & Spencer car insurance is urging drivers to use caution when getting behind the wheel following the recent freeze. Many drivers have left their cars under the snow while the it has affected most of the UK over the past week, but icy conditions continue to make the roads dangerous so drivers should be take precautions if they do dig the car out and hit the road. M&S car insurance urges those who cannot heed the police advice to stay off the roads if possible should clear all snow and ice so that they can see where they are going, the car insurance provider says, and should make sure the car is roadworthy. David Wells, head of insurance at M&S, said: “Motorists living in areas where roads are icy should heed police advice and not make unnecessary journeys.” But for those that do, he said, “Before getting back into your vehicle clear all snow and ice, making sure that you have clear visibility.

Brits are opting for a suitable ‘snow mobile’ to beat the snow and icy conditions being felt across the country this month; on 8 January, searches for 4×4 car insurance accounted for more than three per cent of all searches. Insurance Industry Should Recover As Economy Improves

As long as the economy can keep it’s momentum into the 2010, the insurance industry’s fortunes should also improve.  They are at markedly improved situation from the start of 2009 which was at the height of the financial crisis.   While the stock market has a ways to go before it fully recovers, the partial rebound in the latter half of 2009 took a heavy burden off the industry’s capital levels.

There is a lot of uncertainty for the industry going into 2010 , especially where financial regulation is concerned.  The health insurance sector also has major concerns over the ongoing health care debate in Congress.Demand for insurance took a big hit in 2009 and with the labor market yet to recovery, the number of policies the industry writes could be well below normal levels for most of 2010.  While it looks to be slow going in the first half of the new year, many analysts are hoping for demand to pick up in the latter half as the economy continues to improve.

A more lingering problem may be the general decline in premium prices as lower demand has spurred competition between insurers trying to maintain market share.  State regulators will also be reluctant to approve request for rate hikes as their many of their residents continue to struggle.

While underwriting profits have never really made up the bulk of the industry’s profits, what may be even more important is whether or not the stock market continues it’s recovery.  Investment profits are their bread and butter and with the lessons from the recession still fresh in their minds, the industry is also likely to seek safer investments and thus returns than the past few years.

While they may not be as profitable as the years leading up to the recession as long as they returned to their tried and true methods, the insurance industry should recover somewhat in 2010.

Drivers are being urged to protect themselves fully as the risk of a claim is greatly increased in the current freezing weather, according to MoneySupermarket.com.

Car insurance customers should ensure that they have breakdown cover as part of their policies in the present wintry conditions. In recent weeks a ‘big freeze’ has descended on the UK, with heavy snow falling in various parts of the country and temperatures dropping far below normal for this time of year. This has resulted in hazardous driving conditions, particularly with the threat of black ice after the latest round of snowfall.

MoneySupermarket.com has now recommended that drivers check their policies for breakdown cover, especially as their vehicles are more likely to experience problems in icy weather. Head of motor insurance, Steve Sweeney, said: ” Comprehensive motor breakdown cover is a must for motorists to avoid being stranded in the cold. Read more…
