Because there have been so many people laid off from jobs that they have worked at for years, due to the economy crunch and cut backs that America has experienced over the past decade, there are millions of people without health care coverage. Some people have been covered for a period of 18 months or so by Cobra plans, but those insurance policies are not permanent and there comes a time when a person will need to obtain their own, individual insurance coverage. Obtaining health insurance after cobra is not the easiest of tasks, especially if there is some sort of preexisting condition present, however, it is not impossible, and is certainly affordable in most cases.
There are a number of different insurance companies that offer individual health care plans, and most of them have rates that are affordable, depending on the type of coverage a person desires. There are a lot of factors involved in the cost of insurance. Age is one of the key factors but age alone will not always cause an insurance premium to go up. For example, a 45 year old male who does not smoke cigarettes, is not overweight, and is in generally good condition, can get a much cheaper insurance policy than a 45 year old obese male who smokes cigarettes and drinks alcohol to excess. The same goes for younger people. People who are under the age of 25 and have no known health conditions, do not smoke, and are not married, can generally obtain extremely cheap insurance plans.
Unfortunately, people have been conditioned to believe that having insurance is very expensive and therefore out of their reach. In fact recent surveys taken show that about 50% of people who are uninsured have never even inquired about an insurance policy. The other 50% have let their insurance policies lapse, or have lost coverage due to the loss of a job, or in younger college age kids, because they have quit school causing their parents insurance policy to drop them. Whatever the reason a person has found themselves without insurance, whether it is because their cobra has expired or because they previously thought they could not afford it, performing an online search will surely bring up a lot of options that they are sure to be able to manage.
