HSBC and first direct has made airspace closure cover a standard feature of all their travel insurance policies .

This comes as a result of the two banks’ decision to allow claims from travel insurance customers affected by April’s volcanic ash cloud. The policy improvements will allow new and existing customers to claim on their insurance if they have to cancel their trip or have to remain abroad due to airspace, airport or even port closure.

It also includes disrupted travel due to a wide-ranging number of extraordinary situations including pandemics, prevention of terrorism or natural disasters.

Brendan Cook, Head of HSBC Customer Propositions, said: “In April, we helped thousands of our customers who were stranded all over the world after the Icelandic volcano ash cloud brought European airspace to a standstill. As The World’s Local Bank we felt this was appropriate, despite this kind of event not being covered in the standard terms and conditions. Read more…

by Nicholas Rogers December 04, 2010 in Home Insurance Topics

College student renter’s insurance protects a renter or leasee from property loss in case of fire or other acts of nature, as well as personal injury.

Students living off-campus while away at college should strongly consider purchasing renter’s insurance to protect their personal property. Regardless if the rental property is a home, condominium, or an apartment, the landlord’s insurance is solely for the protection of the landlord — it does not protect the renter. Loss, theft, or damage to the student’s personal property, such as computers, televisions, stereos, and other property can be a significant setback for a college student’s finances.

Dog owners urged not to cut back on pet insurance this winter

With vet bills continuing to rise, NFU Mutual is advising dog owners not to cut-back on pet insurance this winter.

A survey by the insurer of more than 874 pet owners found that 53 per cent do not have pet insurance .

There is usually an increase in claims for dogs slipping and injuring themselves during cold, icy conditions and with the average cost for a claim of this nature coming to 2,000, many pet owners without insurance could be facing a massive bill this winter if they can’t find the funds to pay for treatment.

Justine Simms-Gould, General Insurance Underwriter at NFU Mutual, said: “Veterinary treatment continues to be an area of high claims, both in terms of numbers and costs. With that in mind, any money an owner may save by cancelling or failing to renew a policy could prove to be a false economy when compared to the expense of meeting bills for serious conditions or accidents .”
